PANIGASPI: a Flutter marketplace that rescues unsold food and saves local businesses money
Food waste is one of the most striking paradoxes of the modern retail world. Restaurants, bakeries, sandwich shops, and small supermarkets throw away perfectly edible food every single evening — often bread, pastries, prepared meals and produce that are still fresh and safe to eat, but cannot legally or commercially be sold the next morning. At the same time, millions of consumers would gladly pay a discounted price for those same items if only they knew where and when to pick them up.
PANIGASPI bridges that gap. Built with Flutter for the mobile front end and Firebase for the serverless backend, the application turns unsold food into a win-win transaction: merchants recover part of their losses, consumers eat well for less, and the environmental footprint of the food industry is meaningfully reduced.
The marketplace experience for consumers
- Real-time offer display: users see the list of baskets available around them right now, with the quantity still in stock updating live as other users purchase.
- Detailed listings: each offer shows a product description, the original price versus the discounted price, the merchant's identity, the quantity remaining, and the exact pickup cutoff time.
- Geolocation-first UX: the app sorts offers by distance by default and displays them on an interactive map so the user picks the option that fits their commute or errands.
- Built-in reservation and payment: the user reserves a basket in a single tap, pays inside the app, and receives a confirmation code to show at pickup. No cash handling, no negotiation at the counter.
- Order history and favorites: users can save their preferred merchants, repeat orders in one tap, and track the environmental impact of their purchases over time.
- Account management: email/phone registration, secure login, password recovery, profile editing — everything expected from a modern consumer app.
The merchant side of the platform
- Quick listing creation: merchants publish a basket in under a minute, specifying the contents, original value, discounted price, quantity, and pickup window.
- Automatic cutoff management: unsold baskets expire automatically at the chosen time, avoiding awkward stock management issues.
- Sales dashboard: merchants see their daily revenue from anti-waste sales, track trends, and identify their best-performing basket types.
- Customer communication: a direct messaging channel is available in case of questions about the pickup.
The technical stack and its benefits
Flutter for a single cross-platform codebase A single Dart codebase compiles to both iOS and Android apps, cutting development and maintenance costs roughly in half compared to two native stacks. The native look-and-feel of each platform is preserved thanks to Flutter's widget system, so users never feel they are using a "generic" app.
Firebase as the serverless backend Firestore powers the real-time sync of listings and reservations. Firebase Authentication handles secure login flows. Cloud Functions orchestrate the business logic (payment validation, pickup notifications, basket expiration). Firebase Storage holds the images uploaded by merchants. The result is a backend that scales automatically with user growth, with zero server administration for the client.
Integrated payment flow The app embeds a payment solution that collects funds from the consumer, retains the platform fee, and transfers the balance to the merchant — all inside the app experience, without redirecting the user to an external website.
The impact on the community and the environment
- Every transaction prevents food waste at the local level, with a cumulative effect that grows alongside the user base.
- Merchants convert a loss into revenue they previously did not capture.
- Consumers discover new local businesses they might never have visited otherwise, strengthening neighborhood retail ecosystems.
- Transparent environmental reporting inside the app quantifies the CO₂ equivalent saved, turning every user's behavior into a visible, shareable impact.
