A web calculator that turns curious visitors into qualified security-system leads

Most commercial websites in the physical security industry suffer from the same problem: they describe their services in generic terms, then ask visitors to "request a quote". Most people never fill that form because they have no idea whether their budget aligns with the service at all. The result is a landing page that converts poorly and a sales team that wastes hours qualifying inappropriate leads.

This project solved that problem for DC Metro IT Help by building an interactive web calculator that gives prospects an instant, credible cost estimate for their security system project — and captures them as a qualified lead in the same motion.

The business problem addressed

DC Metro IT Help serves businesses that want to install or upgrade surveillance cameras, access control points, and structured cabling. Before the calculator existed, prospects had to either wait for a sales call or browse static brochures to understand what their project would cost. The friction cost the company a measurable share of its inbound pipeline.

The calculator flips the dynamic: visitors get an immediate answer to their most pressing question ("how much is this going to cost me?"), the sales team gets fully-qualified contact details, and the brand positions itself as transparent and technically rigorous — three strategic wins from a single tool.

The technical architecture

Built with a PHP backend plus HTML, CSS, and vanilla JavaScript on the front end, the tool is deliberately lightweight, fast to load, and easy to host on any shared hosting platform. No heavy framework, no SPA complexity — just reliable engineering tailored to the client's infrastructure.

  • Detailed cost breakdown: labor, equipment, cabling, installation fees, and optional maintenance contracts are itemized transparently. No hidden costs, no trust issues.
  • Fully responsive design: the tool works flawlessly on desktop, tablet and mobile, matching the behavior of decision-makers who often research vendors from their phone during the workday.

Integrated lead generation

Once the prospect has their estimate, a form invites them to schedule a free on-site consultation to validate the numbers with an expert. This is the conversion moment of the whole experience.

  • The form is minimal (name, company, phone, email, preferred date) to maximize completion rates.
  • Submissions are automatically routed to the sales inbox and tagged with the full detail of the calculator inputs, so the sales rep walks into the first call already knowing the prospect's scope.
